| The Blawan Estate is part of PT. Perkebunan Nusantata XII. This company was formed in 1996 as a merger of three state owned enterprises and is under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture. Their mission statement is "To contribute positively to the nation's economy by prioritizing on profit, benefit, to ensure optimum stable and sustainable growth".
The workforce being government employees are all paid the local minimum wage and are also supplied with basic amenities, housing and schooling. The Estate (2.265 HA) initially planted by the Dutch in 1894 is an "ecologically friendly environment" with the coffee being shade grown and "bird friendly". At the eastern end of Java the estate (and its neighbours - Jampit, Pancoer and Kayumas), are located on the Ijen Plateau. The volcanic soil (which is a feature of several quality coffees) which coupled with the altitude of 1000 - 1600m produces the fine coffee which we offer. |

Tasting Notes
| I like this coffee! While it doesn't have the strong earthiness of our previous Java's it is still definately Java. I've also taken the roast down a shade which has reduced the apparent "strength" of the coffee, tho' if you taste it carefully (close your eyes and listen to your taste buds!) you'll find it is still a wonderful French style coffee - you can just hear the accordian music and smell the "garlic and gauloise". | |
